Myths and Facts About Adult Braces

If you’re thinking about starting orthodontic treatment as an adult, the first people you talk to may be friends and family. Unless they’re orthodontists, there’s a good chance you’re going to hear a few half-truths and maybe even some full-myths during these conversations. Here are the three most common misconceptions about adult braces.

Myth # 1 - Braces Are Always Metal

The Truth

Molen Orthodontics offers discreet braces options for those who would prefer not to have a distracting “mouth full of metal.” Damon Clear Braces, for example, are able to gently move your teeth into their ideal position, all while being much less noticeable than traditional braces. That’s because they utilize stain-resistant brackets made from a clear material to subtly blend in with your teeth. In some cases, we can even use tooth-colored wires to make things even less noticeable! Many of our patients report that their friends and family don’t even realize they’re undergoing treatment.

Myth # 2 - Orthodontics Are Always Noticeable

The Truth

While we addressed this myth above, it’s worth noting that Invisalign takes discreet orthodontics to the next level. Invisalign uses clear, smooth aligners that are replaced every few weeks as they work to reposition your teeth into their optimal position. These aligners are completely transparent, making them nearly impossible to see. Additionally, they can be removed for short periods of time, such as during meals or even special occasions as long as you're wearing them diligently for 22 hours a day.

Myth # 3 - Braces Are Uncomfortable

The Truth

Over the years, orthodontic treatment has grown leaps and bounds, with modern options putting far less pressure on your teeth. This is because our treatment options (such as Damon and Damon Clear Braces) are self-ligating. This means they produce less tension and friction than traditional braces which results in significantly less discomfort than you may have been told to expect.
